Questions
How long does a Greek salad jar last in the fridge?
When layered properly and stored without dressing, a Greek salad jar will stay fresh for up to 4 days in the refrigerator. Keep the dressing separate and add it just before serving to prevent sogginess.
What size jar should we use?
A 32-ounce mason jar works best for a full serving. However, we love using this Salad Pod Jar for meal prep. It lays flat and opens from the top and side for straightforward layering and eating on-the-go. Bonus – it comes with a separate, sealed dressing container that sits inside the top of the jar! You can find it on Amazon here: Salad Pod Jar US Salad Pod Jar CA
Do jar salads get soggy?
They can if layered incorrectly or dressed too early. Thus, placing sturdy ingredients at the bottom and delicate greens at the top prevents sogginess.
Can we make this recipe dairy-free?
Absolutely. Instead of using cubed cheese, omit the cheese or replace it with a dairy-free alternative.
Why are our tomatoes making the jar watery?
Since diced tomatoes release moisture over time, it’s best to use whole cherry tomatoes to prevent sogginess. Additionally, make sure cut tomatoes are well drained and avoid overfilling the jar for the best texture.
Ingredients
Makes 1 jar
- 1 cup diced cucumber
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes
- ¼ cup Kalamata olives
- ¼ diced red onion, soaked in hot water
- 1 cup organic chickpeas, canned
- 1 cup finely chopped lettuce
- ⅓ cup cubed cheese of choice
The Dressing
- ½ tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons honey Dijon mustard
- ¼ cup Greek yogurt
- pinch of salt
Equipment
- Large Mason Jars
- Measuring Cups + Spoons
- Salad Pod Jar
Method
- Whisk the dressing ingredients together in a small bowl until fully emulsified. Set aside. The dressing should be stored separately and added just before serving.
- In a large wide mouth jar layer the ingredients in the following order. The order is important to keep the vegetables crisp and prevent sogginess. Layer the jar from bottom to top with chickpeas, cucumbers, cheese, tomatoes, olives, gently packed lettuce, and red onion.
- To serve, pour the desired amount of dressing into the jar, secure the lid tightly, and shake until evenly coated. Alternatively, empty the jar into a serving bowl and toss with the dressing to combine.
Kitchen notes
- Layering Tip: The order of ingredients matters. Always place sturdy, moisture-resistant ingredients at the bottom (like chickpeas and cucumbers) and delicate greens at the top. This prevents sogginess and keeps the lettuce crisp for days.
- Storage: Store the salad jar sealed tightly in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Keep the dressing in a separate airtight container and add it just before serving to maintain texture and freshness.
- Serving suggestions: For best results, pour the dressing into the jar, secure the lid, and shake well to evenly coat all the layers. Alternatively, empty the jar into a large bowl and toss gently with the dressing before serving.
- Yogurt: We use Greek yogurt because we like the added protein. However, you can use any yogurt of choice.
- Mustard: We do not recommend regular mustard. Stick with Honey Dijon for best results in terms of acidity and sweetness.
- Protein boost: Add grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon or tuna for extra protein.
- A Note on Ingredients: Measure with your heart. All quantities are approximate. Adjust the vegetables and dressing to suit your taste — this salad is meant to be personalized.
