We opted for the convenience of adding firewood and cooking kits, saving us the trouble of packing and transporting these bulky items. The firewood kit was thoughtfully equipped with wood, kindling, marshmallow roasting sticks, and a lighter, ensuring effortless campfire enjoyment. The cooking kit was equally impressive, featuring a cast iron skillet, a Dutch oven, silicone pot holders, a spatula, tongs, a sponge, and dish soap – everything needed for gourmet outdoor cooking.

Inside Our Luxury Tent: Comfort Meets Wilderness

The tent itself was a marvel of design and comfort. Beyond its aesthetically pleasing exterior, it housed an incredibly comfortable bed adorned with luxurious bedding, promising restful nights under the stars. The thoughtful amenities extended to a dresser for our belongings, soft towels, a table and chairs, and a selection of coffee and tea. For entertainment, a deck of cards was provided, along with a corkscrew for evening relaxation. Essential toiletries, a kettle, a coffee maker, a cooler, and a water jug rounded out the comprehensive setup. Illumination came from charming lanterns and convenient tap lights, creating a warm and inviting ambiance as dusk settled.

A crucial piece of advice, which I learned the hard way (more on that later), is to ensure all your food items are stored in either a cooler or a hard, sealed container like a Rubbermaid tote. This is paramount for a peaceful glamping experience.

An Evening of Relaxation and Exploration: Happy Hour by Cascade Lake

After settling into our exquisite tent, we inaugurated our glamping experience with a mobile happy hour. I had thoughtfully packed some cheese and soppressata, my favorite small cheese board, and, of course, wine. Boxed wine, such as our go-to Bota Box Pinot Grigio, is truly ideal for camping. It offers a substantial quantity of wine in a compact, lightweight package, minimizing both trash and carrying weight. Its airtight design and easy-dispense tap make it incredibly convenient for outdoor enjoyment. Instead of fragile wine glasses, I brought adorable enamelware mugs that cleverly doubled as both wine and coffee cups. We savored our wine and cheese from the comfort of Adirondack chairs, gazing upon the serene beauty of Cascade Lake.

Hiking Around Cascade Lake: A Perfect Afternoon Stroll

Following our relaxed happy hour, we embarked on a refreshing hike around Cascade Lake. The trail, easily accessible from our campsite, offered a relatively short and gentle trek. Our choice to visit in September, typically a fickle month in the Pacific Northwest, proved serendipitous. While nestled in our incredibly comfortable bed, the wind intensified, and a few times during the night, I was convinced I heard wildlife lurking around our tent. Knowing there are no bears on Orcas Island provided some reassurance, but the presence of deer, while not inherently scary, can be quite unsettling when they’re rustling just outside your canvas walls in the dark. Despite the plush bedding and warm covers, these mysterious nighttime sounds did disrupt my sleep a bit.

Day Two: Majestic Views and More Island Hikes

The next morning greeted us with glorious sunshine streaming into the tent, inspiring us to fire up the campfire for a hearty breakfast and freshly brewed coffee (more on our camping meal plans in a future post!). After a satisfying meal and tidying up, we drove to Mount Constitution, the highest peak in the San Juan Islands. I had initially considered hiking this iconic mountain, but a family member residing on the island advised against it, noting it’s not the most pleasant ascent. As relatively beginner hikers, we opted for the scenic drive, which proved absolutely worthwhile. Exploring Mountain Lake: Another Rewarding Trail

Still eager for more hiking, we drove back down the mountain to Mountain Lake. This trail presented another pleasant and relatively easy hike, though slightly longer than our Cascade Lake adventure. Following our invigorating hike, we returned to our glamp site for another delightful happy hour, a short evening walk, and a delicious dinner. Our days settled into a comfortable rhythm: hiking, eating, hiking, eating – truly the essence of a relaxed camping lifestyle, albeit with an added touch of luxury.

A Crucial Lesson: The Tale of the Tent Mouse

Now, for the part of our story where I urge you to learn from our oversight. Remember my earlier advice about always keeping your food in a hard container? This is precisely why. Growing up camping in Alaska, I was taught to store food far from the campsite, typically in a car, to deter bears. Given that Orcas Island has no bears, I mistakenly assumed deer and perhaps raccoons were our only wildlife concerns. And surely, deer wouldn’t enter a tent, right? Believing this, and despite keeping our cold items in a cooler, our pantry staples were stored in reusable grocery bags. After diligently cleaning up dinner, we brought all our food *into* our tent for safekeeping. Or so we thought.

Mr. Briar and I were enjoying the warmth of our campfire when a peculiar noise emanated from inside the tent. I turned to look, and to my dismay, saw a small mouse leisurely exploring our food bags! “Crap!” I exclaimed. We sprang to our feet, startling the intruder, which swiftly escaped through a small hole in the wooden floor. We quickly plugged the hole with paper towels, transferred all our food into the cooler, and confidently believed the problem was resolved. We were wrong.

Around 1 AM, I was jolted awake by a distinct skittering sound *inside* the tent. “Gah!” I instinctively grabbed my headlamp, illuminating the tent just in time to see a tiny mouse scurrying down the wall. “Guuuuuuuh,” I groaned. They could climb walls, and they knew we had food. They were determined. Needless to say, it was another largely sleepless night, punctuated by frantic skittering, my sudden shrieks accompanied by turning on the light, and Mr. Briar’s exasperated declaration, “No more camping!”

So, please, learn from my mistake: you are in the wilderness, and there are many hungry creatures, big and small, that would love to get their paws (or creepy little hands) on your food. Always pack your provisions in sealed, hard containers to prevent unwelcome visits.

2. Coffee Grinder: Freshly Ground Goodness
   As self-proclaimed coffee snobs, we believe fresh ground beans make all the difference. This is another item we use daily at home, so bringing it along was a no-brainer. Grinding your own beans isn’t difficult and dramatically improves your coffee’s flavor. We use THIS compact grinder. 3. Kettle: For Taste-Free Hot Beverages
   Our glampsite provided a cast iron kettle, but it imparted an unpleasant metallic taste to the water. I genuinely wished I had brought an alternative. It’s also perfect for those quintessential “hipster Instagram” moments: Forget overpriced artisanal versions; these classic mugs are the original, authentic choice!

   Though our site offered lanterns, nothing compares to the utility of a headlamp. They are indispensable for cooking in the dark, navigating to the bathroom in the middle of the night, or any task requiring hands-free light. They provide excellent illumination and, let’s be honest, you’ll look pretty cool wearing one.
8. Cheese Board: A Touch of Elevated Dining
   Before you chuckle, remember these are *glamping* essentials! And yes, a cheese board undeniably belongs on this list. I’ve had mine, bought on clearance at Target years ago, and use it constantly (as evidenced by many photos on this blog!). Since mine is no longer available, THIS one looks similar (actually nicer, I’m jealous!). 9. Cast Iron Skillet: The Versatile Outdoor Cookware
   Our glampsite included a cast iron skillet in the cooking kit we added. However, if your site doesn’t provide one, I highly recommend bringing your own. It’s unparalleled for cooking over an open fire and suitable for countless recipes and meals. If you bring only one pan, this should be it. The skillet provided at our site was a bit small, so I’d recommend the 12-inch version, which is the size we use at home.
10. Hand Sanitizer & Wet Wipes: Essential for Hygiene in Nature
    For those who, like me, prioritize hand washing, being away from running water can be challenging. Having hand sanitizer readily available brought immense peace of mind, especially after handling raw chicken or, as in our case, dealing with a mouse mishap. Wet wipes are another fantastic alternative for quick cleanups and general hygiene when traditional washing facilities are not nearby.
