Our recent exploration of Vancouver confirmed its reputation as a city that captivates. Vancouver, BC, is an exceptionally gorgeous city, radiating a sophisticated European flair amidst the rugged grandeur of the Pacific Northwest. Imagine majestic mountains meeting the sparkling ocean, lush forests crisscrossed with scenic trails, all juxtaposed against a bustling cityscape brimming with high-end shopping, diverse cultural attractions, and an unparalleled dining scene. While a single weekend may not be enough to delve into every corner, it provides a fantastic introduction to Vancouver’s charm. Even though our visit was accompanied by typical Pacific Northwest rain, we still managed to create lasting memories and uncover some of the city’s true treasures.
Arriving & Settling In: Your Vancouver Weekend Begins
Friday Afternoon: Nature’s Embrace and Waterfront Views
Upon arrival, make your way to your accommodation. For a truly immersive experience and the flexibility to walk to many key attractions, consider making Yaletown your home base. This trendy district boasts chic condos and a vibrant atmosphere. Alternatively, Downtown Vancouver offers a plethora of hotels right in the heart of the action, providing easy access to everything. Services like Airbnb or Home Away can help you find a unique rental that suits your style. Once you’ve checked in or dropped off your bags, it’s time to embark on your Vancouver adventure.
Begin your exploration at Stanley Park, an extraordinary urban oasis spanning over 1,000 acres. This verdant paradise is much more than just a park; it’s a living forest with ancient trees, scenic trails, pristine beaches, and home to the largest aquarium in Canada. Rent a bike to cycle the iconic Seawall, offering panoramic views of the city, mountains, and ocean, or simply wander through its serene pathways, discovering hidden lagoons and impressive totem poles. The sheer scale and beauty of Stanley Park provide a perfect juxtaposition to the urban environment just beyond its borders.

As the afternoon progresses and you seek a moment of relaxation, head to the historic Teahouse in Stanley Park. Despite its name, this charming establishment offers much more than just tea; it features a full menu of delicious fare, along with a selection of wines, beers, and expertly crafted cocktails. Find a comfortable spot, savor a refreshing drink, and soak in the breathtaking waterfront views. It’s the perfect spot to recharge and reflect on the natural beauty surrounding you.

Culinary Journeys & Evening Entertainment
Friday Evening: A Taste of Vancouver’s Fine Dining
After a refreshing afternoon, return to your hotel to prepare for an exquisite dinner. Vancouver’s culinary scene is renowned globally, so it’s highly advisable to make dinner reservations a few weeks in advance. Platforms like Open Table are invaluable for securing your spot at popular eateries and avoiding long waits. For a truly unforgettable dining experience, we wholeheartedly recommend L’abattoir in Gastown. Housed in a former 19th-century brick-and-beam building, this restaurant offers sophisticated French-inspired West Coast cuisine in an elegant setting.
Vancouver boasts an incredible array of other highly-rated restaurants that are worth exploring if your schedule allows. While we couldn’t personally visit all of them on this trip, they came with glowing recommendations:
- Vij’s: A celebrated institution known for its innovative and exquisite Indian cuisine.
- Kissa Tanto: An enchanting jazz-era Japanese-Italian restaurant offering a unique fusion of flavors and an intimate ambiance.
- Fable: Emphasizing “farm-to-table” dining, Fable serves creative Canadian dishes with fresh, local ingredients.
- Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie: A popular spot for modern Taiwanese-French cuisine, perfect for sharing small plates in a lively setting.

Friday Late Night: Unwind with a Nightcap
If the evening is still young and you’re not quite ready to call it a night, consider stopping by the Alibi Room. This Gastown staple is known for its extensive selection of craft beers, spirits, and delicious late-night bites. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed nightcap in a cozy, welcoming environment, reflecting on the day’s discoveries and soaking in Vancouver’s vibrant nightlife.
Saturday: Island Charms and Historic Streets

Saturday Morning: Brunch and Granville Island Wonders
Kickstart your Saturday with a hearty breakfast to fuel a day of exploration. Most locals and guidebooks will point you to Medina Cafe for the best brunch in town. Be prepared for a wait, as its popularity is well-deserved! We arrived a full half-hour before opening at 9 am and still didn’t make the first seating, finally being seated around 10 am. The wait is undeniably worth it for their exquisite Mediterranean-inspired breakfast dishes. Make sure to order a fluffy Liege waffle with your choice of dipping sauce – the chocolate is highly recommended – and complement it with a fragrant lavender latte for a truly delightful start to your day.
If you prefer to skip the queue without compromising on quality, Medina’s elegant sister restaurant, Chambar, is an excellent alternative. We discovered this gem on our second morning and were seated immediately. Chambar offers the exact same delectable menu in an even more opulent and spacious interior. (For those who fall in love with the lavender latte, check out my recipe HERE to recreate it at home!).

After a satisfying brunch, make your way to the iconic Granville Island. To avoid parking hassles and enjoy a scenic ride, consider taking a charming water taxi. Granville Island is a vibrant peninsula and public market district, a hub of artisan studios, unique boutiques, and culinary delights. Once there, snap an Instagram-worthy photo in front of the colorful “Love Wall,” a popular backdrop that embodies the island’s creative spirit.
Dive into the local craft scene by visiting Liberty Distillery. Here, you can sample locally crafted gin and whiskey flights and perhaps pick up a bottle of their finely distilled spirits to take home as a souvenir. Don’t miss the Granville Island Broom Co, where you can marvel at beautiful, handcrafted brooms and even watch the artisans at work, preserving a unique traditional craft.

The heart of Granville Island is its Public Market, a sensory feast overflowing with fresh produce, gourmet foods, and artisan crafts. As you wander through the bustling aisles, be sure to grab a few irresistible doughnuts from Lee’s Donuts – a local legend – to nibble on. For a truly authentic experience, assemble your picnic lunch with delectable charcuterie from Oyama Sausage Company and freshly baked bread from Terra Breads.

Saturday Afternoon: Coastal Picnics and Historic Strolls
With your gourmet picnic provisions in hand, head over to the relaxed and picturesque Kitsilano neighborhood. Enjoy your al fresco meal in the serene Vanier Park, offering sweeping views of the city skyline, or directly on the sandy shores of Kitsilano Beach, a popular spot for locals with its famous outdoor saltwater pool. The laid-back vibe and stunning ocean vistas make this the perfect interlude to your busy day.
After your picnic, make your way back towards Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest and most charming neighborhood. If you’re feeling a bit weary and in need of a caffeine boost, Vancouver’s coffee scene won’t disappoint. Stop for an expertly brewed cup at Nemesis Coffee, known for its vibrant atmosphere and unique blends, or experience the minimalist perfection of Revolver, a specialty coffee shop celebrated for its pour-overs and rotating single-origin beans.

Explore the cobblestone streets of Gastown, admiring its Victorian architecture, independent boutiques, and art galleries. Don’t miss the globally famous Steam Clock, an impressive steam-powered timepiece that whistles and chimes every 15 minutes, releasing steam from its top – a true engineering marvel and a popular photo opportunity. For a panoramic perspective of the city, mountains, and harbor, ascend to the Vancouver Lookout, offering 360-degree views that provide an incredible sense of Vancouver’s expansive beauty.
Saturday Evening: Romantic Dinner in a Historic Setting
For your Saturday evening dinner, we highly recommend Brix and Mortar. Located in a beautifully restored 1912 building in Yaletown, this restaurant offers a truly romantic ambiance, especially in its enchanting glass-covered courtyard. Their modern Canadian cuisine is consistently fantastic, and they are adept at accommodating groups, unlike some other popular venues in the area. Whatever you order, be sure to save room for the Dark Chocolate Pot du Crème – a dessert so rich and decadent, you won’t regret a single spoonful.

Sunday: Last Bites and Cultural Immersion
Sunday Morning: Brunch and Beyond
It’s time to indulge in another memorable Vancouver brunch! As mentioned, we thoroughly enjoyed our second-day brunch at Chambar, savouring their exquisite menu in a more serene setting. Right next door to Chambar is Jam Cafe, another incredibly popular spot with rave reviews for its rustic, comfort-food style breakfasts. However, be prepared for a very long wait, so if Jam Cafe is on your must-try list, plan to arrive well before opening. For another highly recommended breakfast option that’s beloved by locals, consider Catch 122, known for its creative dishes and welcoming atmosphere.
If your schedule permits and you still have time before departing, consider a visit to the Museum of Anthropology at UBC (MOA). While I didn’t get to explore it on this particular trip, it remains high on my list for its stunning collection of First Nations art and cultural artifacts from around the world, housed in an architectural marvel designed by Arthur Erickson. It’s a profound and enriching experience that offers deep insight into indigenous cultures and global heritage.
