Embracing the Old Fashioned: A Revelation
For many years, the very name “Old Fashioned” conjured images of a bygone era, perhaps a drink best left to those with a more acquired taste. I admit, I often dismissed it as a drink that was, well, old-fashioned – a harsh, unapproachable concoction. However, there’s a profound reason why this particular cocktail has endured through centuries, securing its place as a bona fide classic. My personal revelation occurred on a truly perfect autumn day in Bend, Oregon. The air was crisp, the sky a vivid, cloudless blue, and golden aspen leaves shimmered in the sunlight. I found myself on a cozy patio, warmed by a crackling fire pit, when I noticed “Orchard Old Fashioned” on the menu. It felt like destiny, the quintessential drink for such an idyllic setting.

The Foundation: How to Make a Traditional Old Fashioned
Understanding the classic Old Fashioned is key to appreciating its apple-infused counterpart. The traditional method emphasizes simplicity and balance, allowing the whiskey to shine while being subtly enhanced by sweet and bitter notes. To create a classic Old Fashioned, you begin by muddling a sugar cube with a few dashes of aromatic bitters and a splash of water directly in the serving glass. This process dissolves the sugar and integrates the flavors. Once the base is prepared, add your chosen whiskey, a generous amount of ice, and stir gently for about a minute. The stirring not only chills the drink but also slightly dilutes it, opening up the whiskey’s complex aromas. Finally, it’s garnished with an orange peel, releasing essential oils that elevate the entire experience.
Sweetening the Deal: Sugar vs. Simple Syrup in Old Fashioneds
While the purist might insist on a sugar cube, practicality often dictates alternatives. I don’t always keep sugar cubes readily available, so I’ve perfected a method using granulated sugar. I start with a half teaspoon of sugar, saturate it thoroughly with orange bitters – a crucial element for that citrusy depth – and then add about half a teaspoon of water along with a strip of fresh orange zest. These ingredients are then carefully muddled together until the sugar is completely dissolved, forming a rich, flavorful syrup at the bottom of the glass. If you happen to have homemade simple syrup on hand, this can be an excellent substitute for the sugar and water combination, offering even greater ease. The beauty of crafting your own Old Fashioned lies in the ability to customize; you can adjust the amount of sweetness to perfectly match your palate. Personally, I find that half a teaspoon of sugar provides just the right balance, allowing the whiskey’s character to remain prominent without being overly sweet.

The Heart of the Drink: Apple Whiskey for the Apple Old Fashioned
The timeless Old Fashioned cocktail is traditionally crafted with whiskey – typically bourbon or rye. However, what sets our Apple Old Fashioned apart, making it truly special, is the innovative use of apple whiskey. This spirited choice not only infuses the drink with a delightful fruitiness but also serves as an inviting gateway for those who might be hesitant about whiskey. If you’ve previously considered yourself “not a whiskey drinker,” this particular concoction might just change your mind. The subtle sweetness and crisp notes from the apple whiskey, beautifully complemented by the bright aromatics of the orange peel, create an incredibly palatable and smooth drink. It’s a cocktail that encourages slow sips, designed to be savored and enjoyed throughout an evening, making it far more approachable than its traditional counterparts.
The Essential Zest: Why Garnish Matters
When it comes to an Old Fashioned, the garnish is far more than a decorative afterthought; it’s an integral component of the flavor profile. Typically, an Old Fashioned is adorned with an orange peel or a wedge, often accompanied by a cocktail cherry or two. While I consider the cherry an optional, albeit pleasant, addition, the orange peel is non-negotiable. Its vibrant zest releases aromatic oils directly into the drink, providing a crucial layer of flavor that, in my estimation, truly completes the cocktail. It adds a bright, citrusy counterpoint to the whiskey’s richness and the sugar’s sweetness, creating a harmonious and complex sipping experience.

A Nod to Origin: The McMenamins Experience
That unforgettable crisp fall day in Bend, Oregon, where I first discovered the “Orchard Old Fashioned,” took place at a McMenamins location. For those unfamiliar, McMenamins is a beloved, Oregon-based chain of brewpubs and hotels, each uniquely themed and often housed in historic buildings. While Portlanders might playfully claim to “love to hate” McMenamins, citing occasional critiques of their food or service, there’s an undeniable, deep-seated affection for the brand among locals. My husband and I, in particular, hold a special fondness for them; in fact, we even celebrated our wedding at one of their charming venues. Beyond brewing exceptional beer, McMenamins also boasts a winery and, pertinent to our discussion, a distillery. Their acclaimed apple whiskey, known as Aval Pota, is the very spirit used in their signature Orchard Old Fashioned. Ever since that memorable visit, I yearned to recreate the magic at home. Recently, during a stop at a newly opened McMenamins location in Washington, I seized the opportunity to acquire my own bottle of Aval Pota, ensuring I could craft a delicious rendition of this exceptional drink whenever the craving struck.

Choosing Your Apple Whiskey
While my initial experience and personal preference lean towards McMenamins’ Aval Pota, it’s important to note that you don’t necessarily need this specific brand to create a fantastic Apple Old Fashioned. I believe most good quality apple whiskies available on the market would perform beautifully in this cocktail. However, having only used Aval Pota in my own experiments, I can confidently say it delivers exceptional results. If you are fortunate enough to find it, I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try. Its balanced apple notes and smooth character make it ideal for this particular twist on the classic. Should Aval Pota be unavailable, feel free to explore other reputable apple whiskey brands; the goal is to find a spirit that offers a pleasant balance of fruit and whiskey flavor, ensuring your cocktail is as delightful as mine.
