Delicious One Pan Orange Chicken and Broccoli served hot with rice

Say goodbye to Monday blues with a dinner that brings joy and ease to your kitchen. We all know the dreaded “what’s for dinner?” dilemma, and that’s precisely why this Healthier One Pan Orange Chicken and Broccoli recipe was born. My goal is always to create simple, wholesome meals that fit into hectic schedules, just like my popular Buffalo Chicken and Broccoli Bowls, zesty Chili Lime Shrimp Tacos, and savory Peanut Sauce Chicken and Broccoli Bowls. This recipe continues that tradition, offering a vibrant, balanced meal that’s a breeze to prepare.

To truly illustrate just how straightforward this recipe is, I’ve even created a video tutorial:

The Secret is in the Sauce: A Perfect Balance of Sweet and Savory

The magic of orange in a sweet and spicy sauce is something truly special. I’ve explored this flavor profile before in my Orange Sesame Shrimp, but I believe I’ve truly perfected it here with this One Pan Orange Chicken and Broccoli. The beauty of this sauce lies in its simplicity: all the ingredients are whisked together and then poured into the pan at the very end to thicken beautifully, coating every piece of chicken and broccoli in a glossy, irresistible glaze.

For sweetness, I opted for brown sugar, which lends a rich, caramel-like note that perfectly complements the tangy orange. If you prefer, honey can be used as an alternative, offering a slightly less sweet profile and a distinct floral undertone. Should you choose honey, you might want to add a touch more to achieve your desired level of sweetness, as honey’s intensity can vary. The balance of fresh orange zest and juice, savory soy sauce, tangy rice vinegar, and a hint of sesame oil creates a depth of flavor that is truly addictive.

Unintimidating Ingredients, Big Flavor

While the sauce might boast a list of several ingredients, don’t let that deter you! These are likely staples you already have in your pantry, or easily found at any regular grocery store. Think of them as your secret arsenal for creating incredibly flavorful Asian-inspired dishes at home. Having ingredients like low-sodium soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and chili garlic sauce on hand opens up a world of quick and tasty meals.

For the orange juice, I highly recommend using freshly squeezed oranges. Not only does it offer a brighter, more vibrant flavor that bottled juice simply can’t replicate, but you’ll also be using the zest of an orange anyway, making the fresh-squeezing process a logical step. It only takes the juice of two oranges, and honestly, squeezing them yourself takes hardly any more time than opening a carton of pre-made juice. The fresh zest adds an essential aromatic dimension that elevates the entire dish.

Why You’ll Love This One-Pan Wonder

This recipe isn’t just about speed; it’s about smart cooking. The “one pan” approach means less time scrubbing pots and pans, and more time enjoying your delicious meal. The chicken thighs, chosen for their superior flavor and ability to remain tender and juicy, brown beautifully, creating a caramelized exterior that locks in moisture. The broccoli florets are then added to steam in the same pan, absorbing all the savory flavors while becoming perfectly tender-crisp.

The addition of ginger and garlic to the sauce provides an aromatic base that is fundamental to many Asian cuisines, infusing the dish with warmth and depth. The chili garlic sauce allows you to customize the heat level to your preference, from a gentle warmth to a fiery kick. And finally, the cornstarch acts as a natural thickener, transforming the liquid sauce into a rich, clinging glaze that truly brings the dish together.

Tips for the Perfect Meal

  • **Chicken Choice:** While chicken thighs are recommended for their succulence, boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into bite-sized pieces can also be used. Just be mindful not to overcook them, as they can dry out faster.
  • **Broccoli Prep:** Ensure your broccoli florets are roughly uniform in size for even cooking. Don’t overcrowd the pan when steaming the broccoli; you want it to steam, not sauté.
  • **Sauce Consistency:** If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can add a small slurry of cornstarch and water (about 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water) to the simmering sauce until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • **Customizing Heat:** Adjust the amount of chili garlic sauce to suit your palate. For more heat, add an extra teaspoon; for less, start with half a teaspoon or omit it entirely.
  • **Serving Suggestions:** This dish is fantastic served over fluffy white rice, brown rice, or even cauliflower rice for a low-carb option. You could also serve it with quinoa or noodles.
  • **Meal Prep Friendly:** Cook a larger batch and portion it out for healthy lunches throughout the week. It reheats beautifully!

This Healthier One Pan Orange Chicken and Broccoli is a quick and healthy dinner made in about 20 minutes!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound skinless boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4-6 cups broccoli florets (from about two crowns)
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

For The Orange Sauce:

  • 1 cup fresh orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • Zest of one orange
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1-2 teaspoons chili garlic sauce (to taste)
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, pressed or finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger root
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Optional Garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients for the orange sauce, then set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add chicken pieces and season generously with salt and pepper. Allow the chicken to sit undisturbed for a few minutes until it starts to brown. Turn and allow it to brown on the other side. Stir occasionally and continue to cook until the chicken is cooked through (8-10 minutes total).
  3. Add broccoli florets to the pan and cover with a lid. Allow to steam until the broccoli is bright green and tender-crisp (3-4 minutes).
  4. Pour in the prepared orange sauce, stirring everything to completely coat the chicken and broccoli. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously, until the sauce has thickened to a desirable glaze. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve immediately over rice or cauliflower rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and red pepper flakes if desired.
